Our Practice Philosophy - The Concept of Shared Decision Making
Shared decision-making in medicine is a concept involving a collaborative decision-making process between doctor and patient. It aims to enhance treatment success based on patient preference and values. This is important when multiple treatment options are available and invasive surgery is a possibility.
The patient is invited to the decision-making process, the concept of "choice" is acknowledged, and treatment options discussed. A further discussion regarding decisions and planning is made based on patient preference and understanding. It is intended to present patients with their options supported by best evidence. Various aids such as information brochures and PowerPoint presentations can be used to aid patient education.
This aims to empower patients and improve their knowledge, increase satisfaction and provide better outcomes.
